Williamsburg sits on I-64, about halfway between Richmond and Norfolk, and contains a number of popular public travel and transport options. No less than three airports, along with long-distance transport, such as coaches and trains, serve the Williamsburg area, providing plenty of travel options for getting around the city.

Your choice of airport largely depends on where you are flying from, as tickets to some airports in the Williamsburg area can be cheaper than others. Travel around the city is best done by boarding the Williamsburg Area Transit public bus service, as traffic can get congested and stifling.

Half a dozen car rental travel companies have offices at Newport News / Williamsburg International Airport, while other outlets can be found throughout the city. Williamsburg is served by I-64 - take Exit 238 onto Va. 143 to reach the historic area and Colonial Williamsburg. US 60 runs parallel to I-64 and is lined with chain restaurants and outlet malls, both east and west of the city. Traffic in Williamsburg can get congested during peak times and almost unbearable during the summer months, so if you intend to travel around the city, it is often best to take public transport. The scenic Colonial Parkway, which links Williamsburg with Jamestown and Yorktown, is one of the best reasons to hire a car and the scenery will leave you aching for more.

Greyhound coaches travel to Williamsburg from major centers across the country and arrive at the Transportation Center, within walking distance of the historic area. Williamsburg Area Transport operate a convenient bus service connecting many of the city's attractions from Monday to Saturday, every hour from 06:00 to 20:00, and to 22:00 during the summer months.
